Lift Safety Expo Korea 2012 – the VFA was there!

AFAG, Henning and the VFA-Interlift e.V. took part in the Lift Safety Expo 2012 in Korea in order to get to know the market. With approximately 25 to 30,000 new lifts a year and a stock of 460,000 lifts, Korea is the third biggest lift market in Asia after China and Japan.

Up, up and away!

2013 could be a good year. With interlift, our number one international fair in autumn. And the 10th anniversary of LIFTjournal! The magazine has become firmly established in the industry and will once again publish the official fair newspaper in Augsburg and the LIFTLex.

Shine and save thanks to LED retrofit

Currently everyone is talking about ‘greenovation,’ cost optimisation and energy-saving through retrofitting. In the long-term there is also great potential here thanks to new LED technology – and this at minimal expense. But for whom does the expense make sense? What retrofitting options are available? And what optical effects can this produce? In an interview the expert Alexander Stingl pointed out some trends – and how operators can conserve economic and ecological resources.

Invitation to industry event

On the occasion of 30th Heilbronner Aufzugstage Bosch Sicherheitssysteme in cooperation with SafeLine will once again be issuing an invitation to an industry dialogue this year.

10th Product and Operational Safety Conference

The 10th Product and Operational Safety Conference, the leading specialist information event for years concerning product, operational and plant safety will take place on 18 and 19 March 2013 in Cologne.

Asansör Istanbul 2013

The Asansör will take place for the 13th time in Istanbul. Visitors from around the world are expected from 4 to 7 April 2013 in Turkey. Every two years the international lift fair invites component manufacturers, subcontractors, etc. to exhibit products and services and have the latest technologies presented to them.

Strong successor

As successors to the tried-andtested L7 converter, the frequency converters L1000V and L1000A from Yaskawa cover a wide application spectrum, especially in lifts. The L1000V version is designed for open loop operation without transducer in the power range 4 to 15 kW. Consequently, it is especially suitable for the modernisation of existing lifts as well as for the new construction of geared lifts up to 1.0 m/s.

Tailor-made maintenance solutions

Operators of lifts often have to deal with all kinds of maintenance agreements and their contingencies. The financial consequences of the different contractual forms are frequently not evident at first sight. Concealed costs arise here for the operator, which represent potential for savings for companies.

More space in the car and shorter waiting times

How DiN standardisation experts in Berlin benefit from a slender lift door
The ‘Haus der Normung’ has been the home of the DIN German Institute for Standardization since 1965. It is the most important national standardisation organisation, which today has an orientation that is European and international to almost 90%. In Berlin- Tiergarten the ‘Haus der Normung’ is an eye-catcher on account of its architecture: the modern extension from 1991 towers over the building section of the old building from the 1960s and 1970s by all of four floors.

The first move in the building codes on lift shaft smoke extraction

Amendment of the Model Building code
The Model Building Code is intended to unify the German federal state building codes subject to local law. It is updated regularly by the building minister conference (ARGEBAU) in which all of the German federal states are represented. The building codes of all federal states are based on this Model Building Code. Consequently, the federal state building codes for the most part contain corresponding regulations; they differ only in detail. The current edition of the Model Building Code dates from 2002 and was last amended in October 2008.

Shaft smoke extraction now only with general building standards approval?

While lift manufacturers did not go out of their way to offer shaft smoke extraction systems, it is not possible today to escape this subject: the market demands these systems. Their advantages are after all anything but a secret.

6th Essen Lift Conference

On 5 and 6 December 2012 the ‘Haus der Technik’ conducted the 6th Essen Lift Conference in cooperation with ThyssenKrupp Aufzüge. The event focused on the subjects of safety, operator responsibility, fire protection and current legal issues. The second conference day took place in ThyssenKrupp Quartier. Current, practically-oriented aspects of lifts and escalators were presented there.

German Lift Day 2012

The VDMA Trade Association Lifts and Escalators staged the German Lift Day for the second time in Berlin on 15 November 2012. The VDMA promotes technical exchange within the industry with this event and involves the management level of the companies and organisations concerned.

Euro-Lift Poland 2012

Fixed place in international fair calendar
The initiators of the Euro-Lift in Kielce in Poland eagerly awaited the second staging of the fair in October 2012: had the impressive start of the fair in 2010 just been beginner’s luck or would it actually prove possible to make the event a meeting point for the industry in Central-East Europe? To be brief: the project seems to have succeeded.

Product training “Shaft and cabin sliding doors” for lift fitters

The focus of the Meiller product training is on fitting and adjusting shaft and lift cabin doors as well as their maintenance and service.

VFA-Interlift working group “Standards” met in Dortmund

The second meeting of the working group “Standards” for 2012 took place on 23 November 2012. This event had been preceded in the first half of 2012 by the meeting of the working group during the course of the VFA general meeting in Lucerne. The semi-annual execution of the events takes account in particular for the complexity and intricacies of the subject matter.

Saving energy – safely!

The energy efficiency demands for new buildings or ones that have to be modernised have increased greatly in Germany due to the Energy-Saving Ordinance (EnEV), which requires a closed external envelope. The problem of lift shaft smoke extraction arises simultaneously. Kone has provided an energy-saving solution with the automatic EnEV shaft smoke extraction kit.

Multifunctional innovation

The Touch TFT 7”, which has been newly developed by Schaefer, is a display module with a seven-inch screen diagonal combined with capacitive touch features. The TFT can be integrated multifunctionally both in existing as well as in new lift cabins as a landing fixture, indicator fixture (direction indicator) and combination lock (integrated in the car fixture to unlock floors). The touch is controlled with parallel signals or via PAN bus (Schaefer bus).

Standard-compatible and without contactor into the future

The requirements with regard to lowering noise emissions by lifts are getting tougher all the time. What is especially irritating here are the switching noises of the contactor, especially in the case of lifts without machine rooms. The current solution is operating lift motors without a motor contactor, but this puts heavy demands on the frequency converter and does not yet represent the last word in this matter. Ziehl-Abegg has now provided the market with a frequency converter in the form of the ZETADYN 4 that complies with the standards and is very much quieter and safer.

Where does the emergency call actually go to?

A lot has already been said on the topic of emergency call telephones for our lifts. What should never be lost sight of either is what happens “afterwards.”

What is produced gets sold too

VFA (Association for Lift Technology Interlift) members on the road at international fairs and markets
The Association has “interlift” in its name, because the trade fair was the reason for its foundation. Fairs play an important role for medium-sized VFA members. German technology and know-how is presented at fairs and sells well worldwide. VFA members regard the market in Germany as good, abroad as currently weak.

DAfA elects new chairman

On 23 October 2012 an era ended. Peter Günther – chairman of the Trade Association Lifts and Escalators in the VDMA – resigned as chairman of DAfA (German Committee for Lifts), a position he had held since the foundation of this committee in 1999. The reason was the planned retirement of Mr Günther at the end of 2012.
