“State of the art” LIFTjournal

A new picture, that’s right! But I can assure you – an old face! New and improved. After all, you should recognise me at the upcoming events – and as you know, there are plenty in spring.

Simply brilliant. Brilliantly simple.

Sidoor: the innovative door management system from Siemens
“We’ll be there” – this is not just the motto of this year’s interlift fair in October 2013, where Siemens will unveil its latest developments in the field of lift door control. "We’ll be there" could also be the theme for Sidoor - the constantly growing product family of door control systems from Siemens.

Paternoster vs. double lift

Paternoster lifts, which used to be characteristic of many administrative and industrial buildings, currently hardly have any future on account of safety regulations. This is at least true of buildings with traffic areas in public use. The Chemnitz Chamber of Commerce and Industry was also faced with this problem. The choice was either shutdown or substitution.

Lift law requirements for ventilation, heat and smoke extraction and cooling systems in elevator shafts

It is long overdue to stop just arguing about the building law requirements regarding systems for smoke extraction, ventilation and heat dissipation in lift shafts and machinerooms. These systems must respect the legal requirements according the Lift Directive. In the course of 2012 clarifying and fundamental publications of partially still underestimated range were produced in this connection by the fire safety organisation VdS and the associations ZVEI (Central Association of the Electrical Engineering and Electronic Industry) and VDMA (German Engineering Association). These publications represent long overdue clarifications of the legal position.

11th VDMA Junior Meeting in Austria

About 40 people travelled to Scheibbs for the Junior Meeting, this time organised by Wittur GmbH. The event took place for the eleventh time on 21 and 22 February 2013 under the patronage of the VDMA (German Engineering Association) Technical Association Lifts and Escalators.

Thirty years Heilbronn Lift Days

Special subject: electronics in lift construction
The Technische Akademie Heilbronn e.V. staged the 30th Heilbronn Lift Days on 5 and 6 March 2013. Due to major renovations in the university, the event took place for the first time in the great hall of the Heilbronn symphony orchestra, which simultaneously endowed the anniversary with appropriate surroundings. Klaus Dietel was responsible for the design and conduct of the Lift Days for the first time and the evening event also had several surprises.

Liftex International 2013

Liftex International is the triennial Exhibition and Conference run to serve the global industry by the UK’s leading lift trade association - the Lift and Escalator Industry Association, LEIA. The 2013 event is already confirmed as being 15% larger than its previous event and it will be packed with a range of new and exciting features.

Modernisation with Kronenberg components

Apart from the installation of new lifts and maintenance or care, modernisation of lifts is increasingly often now part of the lift companies’ daily routine. Lifts installed in the building boom of the 1960s and 1970s are now getting “long in the tooth” while many statutory regulations and guidelines have changed. The number of breakdowns is increasing, service visits are becoming more frequent and the costs for safe lift operation are rising.

Economically Efficient Green Hydraulic Lifts

The general trend in the lift industry is towards lifts with lower energy requirement. Hydraulic power units with inverters have been introduced to decrease energy consumption. In order to make energy-efficient solutions more attractive, a compact, simpler, energyefficient and cost-effective solution needs to be introduced to compete with the advantages of the conventional hydraulic lift. In this article, a green hydraulic elevator solution, EV4-vvvf by Blain Hydraulics is introduced to assure both an energy-efficient and economically-efficient solution.

VFA interlift Forum 2013 Call for Papers

From Tuesday October 15, to Friday October 18, 2013, VFA-Interlift e.V. - Association for Lift Technology - will again be promoting its speakers ´ forum for both exhibitors and visitors at the interlift tradeshow.

Energy efficient lifts

Guidelines, measuring procedures, challenges
Standardised measurements are indispensable for the evaluation of the energy efficiency of lifts. The VDI guideline 4707-1 has since 2009 prescribed how the energy efficiency of lifts is determined and classified. The VDI guideline has to date proved its value in practice. This article looks at what supplements, challenges and developments are currently under discussion.

Tried-and-tested solutions for retrofitted lift car closure

Meiller’s Genius lift car door, which has been tried and tested over many years, is a convincing solution for retrofitting cargo lifts that also transport passengers, but which are still operated without lift car doors.

Skyrocketing superlatives

Fastest lifts in the world in Taiwan
The Japanese company Toshiba has to date built the fastest lifts in the world. Passengers are catapulted from the fifth to the 89th floor of the Taipei 101 building at a speed of 1010 m per minute or 60 km/h. The trip in the Ferrari among lifts takes only 37 seconds – then one is already at a height of 382 m in the viewing area of the highest building in Taiwan.

Eventful history – the escalator turns 120

From fairground attraction to means of mass transport: our modern world is unthinkable without escalators. Current models are distinguished by a maximum of safety and even produce their own electricity.

Riedl Aufzüge at BAU 2013

In January 2013 Riedl Aufzüge exhibited its products for the very first time at the BAU building industry trade fair in Munich. The Riedl fair stand in Hall C3 was equally attractive to building owners, architects, planners and press representatives during the six days of the fair. The affordable lift for homeowners and the slim Riedl lift door enjoyed a very positive response.
