Spring cleaning

Following the grey season, green shoots are at last returning outside and even the last mouse is creeping out of its nest! Full of fresh spring energy, we have also met at various events in recent months and swapped news. Following the Heilbronn Lift Days and annual general meetings of the associations, there now come, among other things, the conference on the subject of standards, the Juniors’ Meeting and Schwelm Symposium. Some of you may even run into each other in Asia.

Gulliver – the home lift

Factors like demographic change, the legal requirements for handicappedfriendly accessibility of buildings in the public sector and the desire of individuals for greater convenience – including in their private surroundings – have led to an increased demand for personal conveyance systems in the private and public spheres. Here both lifts according to the Lifts Directive as well as according to the Machinery Directive – so-called home lifts – are in use.

New training lift in Roßwein

Participants at the vocational college ‘MFM-Roßwein, Mitteldeutsches Fachzentrum Metall und Technik Roßwein’, have had a practice lift available for education and further training in the field of lift technology since December 2013. Turnover record in difficult environment

In 2013 Ziehl-Abegg SE from Künzelsau (Germany) was able to put in a good performance despite a difficult economic situation. Turnover rose by 5% to the record sum of 388 million Euro. Business in Asia was especially good. Investment reached an unprecedented volume of 41.4 million Euro. This was above all due to the new construction of a factory in Hohenlohe (south Germany) for drive technology.

All-round solution for retrofitting EN81 – A3

The EN81 Annex 3 standard introduced in 2012 is now familiar to everyone. Every new lift has to meet this standard. In several countries (e.g. Germany) retrofitting of safety functions according to EN81 - A3 is also required when modernising lifts.

Boredom reigns supreme in German lifts. The interior of many cars is dominated by stainless steel. One reason for this is undoubtedly the effective protection against vandalism these surfaces provide. But this does not have to be unattractive. To relieve all this gloom Schindler has now launched a lift that opens up unprecedented design diversity. For the first time the Schindler 5500 has provided glass surfaces with underlying colouring as a standard option. This facilitates high quality, tailor-made design.

Rollers for lift doors are very important components – whether pulley sheaves, driving pulleys or carrier rollers. For cost reasons – in order to remain competitive – door manufacturers have to pay great attention to price when it comes to these parts.

Drive package for cable lifts

In cooperation with the motor manufacturer Lancor Yaskawa has presented a complete drive package for cable lifts: it combines the specific application frequency converter L1000 with a matching lift motor.

Renovations in the hydraulic elevator market

Over 5 million elevators worldwide are waiting for renovation. Renovation includes improving safety of the elevator according to the latest standards and updating the elevator technology for a better energy efficiency and ride comfort. Use of inverters in traction and hydraulic elevators has been regarded as „Energy efficient technology“ for a quite a while and has gradually become popular

Modernisation of the Berlin television tower

New interior features for the Berlin landmark: ThyssenKrupp installed two modern lifts in Germany’s highest building. At a speed of up to 6 m/s visitors reach the panorama floor at a height of 203 m after about 35 seconds.

The well-established family company Schmitt + Sohn has underlined its international importance at the Nuremberg location by opening a forum for lifts that is unique in the industry.

Oil filtration: affordable, environmentally-friendly and value-preserving

Butz & Neumair, specialist for liftbuilding, has a new service: oil filtration and oil analysis. It not only reduces the susceptibility of lifts and components to malfunctions and preserves blockages, but is in addition cheap and environmentally- friendly. Another advantage: the service can be carried out during ongoing operations.

New head of Kone Group’s Board of Directors

Henrik Ehrrooth will become the new President and Chairman of the Board of Directors (CEO) on 1 April 2014 of the lift and escalator manufacturer with worldwide operations. The Kone Supervisory Board decided on the 44-year old economist as the successor of Matti Alahuhta. The latter had been in charge at Kone since the beginning of January 2005.

New LiftEquip GmbH managing director

On 1 January 2014 Thorsten Elsässer took over the management of LiftEquip GmbH. He can look back on many years of experience in the lift business and was most recently successful as branch manager at ThyssenKrupp abroad.

GS Electronic: new sales staff

Philipp Rösen (24) has been working for GS Electronic Gebr. Schönweitz GmbH since February 2014. He is responsible for the sale of lift emergency call products throughout Germany and the associated services.

New marketing manage ment at DigiPara

Since the end of last year Sandra Eisenbarth has been responsible for marketing at DigiPara GmbH, the leading provider of software solutions for the planning of lifts and escalators. Her task does not just involve carrying on the coherent company and marketing strategy, but above all also in its further development.
