The increased demands of operators and users are challenging the manufacturers of lifts and components to differentiate themselves on the market. The technical service organisation TÜV SÜD supports its customers in this regard worldwide. At the interlift experts will provide information on the modernisation and energy efficiency of lifts as well as on the certification of lifts and safety components.

"Since users place special demands on the safety, comfort and availability of lifts, the burden is on operators to keep their lifts up to the latest standards,” explained the modernisation expert from the Department of Conveyance Technology at TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH. Apart from aesthetic aspects, extensive safety-related, legal and economic considerations also apply. Modular designed modernisation services also help to tailor the measures precisely to particular needs and wishes. TÜV SÜD modernisation experts with an interdisciplinary background support the implementation in the framework of a comprehensive inspection and approve innovations and changes.

Efficient components – VDI Standard 4707, Section 2

"Modern technologies make energy savings of up to 30 per cent possible,” the TÜV SÜD experts for energy efficient lifts pointed out. Sometimes it is enough to replace central lift components in a targeted manner for better efficiency than to renovate the entire lift. Since this year the way is also clear for uniform identification of the energy requirements of components thanks to VDI Standard 4707 having been supplemented by Section 2. Following the publication of the standard "VDI 4707 Blatt 2” TÜV SÜD also provides "Energy efficiency identification for lift components.” The TÜV SÜD certifications "Energy-efficient lifts”, "Energy efficiency components series” and "Calculation procedures for energy efficiency” according to VDI Standard 4707-1 and 2 guarantee reliable energy-related overall evaluations for manufacturers and operators.

The VDI 4707-1 standard describes an internationally recognised methodology for evaluating and identifying the energy efficiency of lifts. In this way various lift types - including from different manufacturers - can be compared and categorised according to efficiency classes A to G on the basis of uniform criteria. A third section of VDI Standard 4707 is to be developed in future as an additional evaluation yardstick, e.g. for platform, cargo and small goods lifts.

Certification of lifts and safety components

The 95/16/EC Lift Directive is currently being revised by the EU Commission and the result will probably be published at the end of the year. After this a transitional period of two years is planned, during which the individual member states have to implement the directive in national law. While the conformity evaluation procedure for lifts and their safety components will not be changed, the harmonised standards of the EN81 series are being revised. They define the safety level in lifts. The standards EN 81-1 and EN 81-2 will be replaced by EN 81-20 (rules) and EN 81-50 (examinations and calculations). New requirements have in particular been defined in the area of landing doors, shaft ladders and the definition of safety areas.

TÜV SÜD recommends manufacturers of safety components and fitting companies acquaint themselves at an early stage with the new features and changed technical requirements. The lift experts of TÜV SÜD will assist operators in meeting the requirements of the Operational Safety Ordinance, among other things and in this way boosting the safety and availability of lifts. Worldwide the balance between efficiency, sustainability and safety takes pride of place.
