Disinfected handrails for customer satisfaction

News

The start-up Uvis has now realised the first germ-free escalator in a shopping centre. The modern UV technology is intended to ensure care-free Christmas shopping in the Hamburg Phoenix Centre.

The weeks before Christmas are among the turnover-strongest times of the year for the retail trade. The UVC disinfection module “Escalite” of the Cologne start-up Uvis UV-Innovative Solutions GmbH is intended to contribute to a “successful and care-free shopping experience”.

Germany’s first germ-free escalator in a shopping centre was realised in the Phoenix Centre in Hamburg Harburg in November 2018, at the prompting of the centre operator, ECE.

Enhanced safety on the escalator

A potential source of infection during the influenza season has been eliminated by the installation of the novel disinfection modules of UVIS UV-Innovative Solutions GmbH on the four escalators in one of the glass-roofed inner courtyards. The module employs UVC light to destroy bacteria, viruses and fungi on the handrails.

Consequently, the shopping centre’s customers need have no fear of pathogens when gripping the handrail. This leads demonstrably to enhanced safety on the escalator and minimises the risk of accidents. The germ-free handrails are identified by large balustrade stickers.

According to a representative survey after the installation of the UVC disinfection module in the Phoenix Centre, visitors reacted positively to the germ-free handrails. About 91 percent of those surveyed found visiting the Centre more pleasant as a result of the disinfected handrails. The positive effects on perceived safety and cleanness, the Centre image and atmosphere were likewise measurable.
